01 — Project Overview

One app, four pillars: bank, move, hold and grow. A neobank that treats trust as the product — self-custody crypto and an editorial calm that makes high-stakes money decisions feel safe.

02 — Executive Summary

From signup to sovereignty, six moves.

Every job a customer hires NEXORA for, on one rail — and each move compounds trust into the next.

MOVE 01
Onboard

KYC and identity in minutes, not days — profile-led setup.

MOVE 02
Fund

Card, bank (Plaid) or Apple Pay — secured by 256-bit AES.

MOVE 03
Move

Send, request, convert FX and spend on virtual + metal cards.

MOVE 04
Hold

Self-custody wallet — a recovery phrase only the user controls.

MOVE 05
Grow

Portfolio velocity and spending intelligence, editorial-grade.

MOVE 06
Stay

Statements, security controls and tiers that earn retention.

The bet

Trust is the product.

People don't switch banks for features — they switch for trust. Self-custody and radical clarity became the wedge, not another rewards table.

The move

One nav grammar, five tabs.

Banking, payments, crypto and wealth behave as one system — every primary job one tap from home.

The result

2-min first transfer · +38% activation.

A single design system shipped the whole surface across iOS and Android with zero drift.

03 — Problem Space

Money lives in five apps that never talk to each other.

A bank app, a transfer app, a card app, a crypto exchange, a robo-investor — five logins, five mental models, and trust leaking at every seam.

Problem 01 — Fragmentation

Five apps, one financial life.

5
disconnected apps for the average user's money — each with its own login, language and limits. Context is lost at every handoff.
Problem 02 — Trust

Crypto felt like a casino, not a vault.

73%
of surveyed users distrusted holding crypto in-app — custody was opaque and recovery terrifying. The fear, not the tech, blocked adoption.
The Solution

One precise app. Bank, move, hold, grow.

A unified neobank where a transfer, a card swipe and a self-custody wallet share one record and one nav grammar — with editorial clarity that turns anxiety into confidence.

04 — Business & User Goals

Two sides. One scoreboard.

Every user goal laddered to a business outcome I could defend in a board review.

Business GoalsWhat the company needed to win
B1

Own the whole money relationship, not one slice. Products per user

B2

Win trust fast so deposits and crypto custody land. Funded-account rate

B3

Monetize premium tiers ($0 / $9.99 / $19.99 Metal). Tier conversion

B4

Ship one system across iOS + Android. Design→dev velocity

User GoalsWhat customers came for
U1

See all my money in one place, clearly. Time-to-overview

U2

Move money instantly — even across borders. Time-to-first-transfer

U3

Hold crypto without fear of losing it. Wallet setup completion

U4

Trust it with real balances. Funded-account rate

05 — Research & Discovery

We listened before we wireframed.

Mixed methods built to separate what people say about money from what they actually do with it.

Who we studied
  • The Sovereign Saver — wants self-custody, fears losing keys
  • The Borderless Pro — multi-currency, mobile-always
  • The Family CFO — shared savings, low risk appetite
Methods
  • 26 depth interviews + money-diary studies, 3 markets
  • Survey (n=1,460) on trust, transfers & crypto anxiety
  • Support-ticket mining + 5 competitor teardowns
Questions
  • Where does trust break on a first transfer?
  • What makes self-custody feel safe, not scary?
  • What must "premium" mean to be worth $19.99?
06 — Key Insights

What the research forced us to do.

Six findings that changed the product — each paired with the move it triggered.

01
Trust is earned in the first 2 minutes.

If users couldn't see a real balance and move a little money fast, they never funded the account.

So we compressed KYC and put a guided first transfer at the heart of onboarding.
02
Self-custody fear was about recovery, not keys.

People weren't scared of crypto — they were scared of losing access forever.

So we made the recovery phrase a calm, guided 1-of-3 ritual with a "never share" guardrail.
03
Opaque fees read as dishonesty.

Hidden FX spreads and transfer fees broke trust faster than the amounts themselves.

So we show the exact rate, spread and total before every move — no surprises.
04
One nav, or it feels like five apps.

Switching mental models between bank, card and crypto felt like app-hopping.

So we built a single 5-tab grammar — Home, Payments, +, Crypto, Profile.
05
"Premium" had to feel editorial, not loud.

Reward tables felt cheap; calm, data-rich design felt worth paying for.

So we made insights and the Metal tier read like a financial magazine, not a coupon.
06
Money moves are emotional, not transactional.

Anxiety spiked at confirmation, not at amount entry.

So we designed reassuring confirm states, receipts and live status into every flow.
07 — Competitive Analysis

Everyone does part of it. Nobody unifies it.

CapabilityNEXORANeoMintVaultCoinHold
Unified bank + payments + crypto

Editorial-grade insights
Virtual + metal cards
Transparent fees up-front

Positioning: rivals win on a single axis — payments or custody or cards. None combine a full bank, self-custody and editorial trust in one app. That white space became the product thesis.

08 — User Personas

Different stakes. One trusted app.

14 — Security & Self-Custody · The Differentiator

Trust, engineered into every screen.

Six capabilities turn "is my money safe?" into a quiet, confident yes — and make self-custody feel like a vault, not a risk.

🔒
256-bit AES

Bank-grade encryption on every funding and transfer flow, surfaced as a calm trust cue.

📱
Biometric + 2FA

Face/Touch ID, trusted devices and two-factor on sensitive actions.

True self-custody

Create or import a wallet; keys never leave the device. Sovereignty by default.

🔑
Guided recovery

A 1-of-3 phrase ritual with "never share" guardrails — recovery without dread.

💳
Transparent fees

Exact rate, spread and total shown before every move — no hidden FX.

📝
Plaid-linked funding

Instant, read-only bank linking — credentials never touch NEXORA.

Security settings
Why it matters

Self-custody fear was a recovery problem, not a key problem.

By designing the recovery moment as a calm, reversible ritual — not a one-shot warning — wallet-setup completion rose to 71% in testing.
15 — UX Decision Making

Every choice had a "because."

Senior design is defensible design. A sample of the calls — and the evidence behind them.

D1
A central "+" action, not a hidden menu

Moving money is the #1 job; burying it cost taps and confidence.

Because first-transfer time dropped 31% with a thumb-anchored primary action.
D2
Show fees before, not after

Post-hoc fees read as a bait-and-switch.

Because up-front transparency lifted transfer completion and cut support tickets.
D3
Profile-led onboarding

Personal, business and family have different first needs.

Because tailoring the first screen to intent raised activation 38%.
D4
Recovery as a ritual, not a warning

A single scary modal made users bail on self-custody.

Because a guided 1-of-3 confirm took setup completion to 71%.
16 — UX Laws Applied

Principles, applied with intent.

Where established laws shaped real screens — named, and used on purpose.

Jakob’s Law
Bank where it feels familiar

Users expect known banking patterns.

Applied: conventional balance, cards and bottom-tab nav — novelty only where it adds trust.
Fitts’s Law
Big, close, thumb-first

Target time scales with size + distance.

Applied: 44px targets; the "+" money action anchored in the thumb zone.
Hick’s Law
Fewer choices, faster moves

Options slow decisions.

Applied: Quick Actions surface the five real jobs, not a wall of features.
Doherty Threshold
Under 400ms

Instant response builds confidence.

Applied: optimistic UI on transfers; skeletons over spinners.
Aesthetic-Usability
Calm buys trust

Polish is perceived as safety.

Applied: editorial typography makes a fintech feel bank-grade safe.
Miller’s Law
Chunk the load

Memory holds ~7 items.

Applied: recovery phrase confirmed in 1-of-3 chunks, not all at once.
Peak-End Rule
Design the confirm

We judge by peak + end.

Applied: reassuring receipts and live status close every money move on a high.
Von Restorff
One accent, remembered

The distinct item stands out.

Applied: a single NEXORA blue marks the primary action; chrome stays quiet.
17 — Accessibility

23 — Edge Cases & Resilience

Designed for the bad day, not just the demo.

Money apps can't degrade into a blank screen. Every failure has a safe, human next step.

Transfer fails
Never lose the money

A failed cross-border transfer is maximum anxiety.

Recovery: funds held, clear reason, retry or switch rail — live status throughout.
Lost recovery phrase
Sovereignty, with a safety net

Self-custody means we can't reset it for them.

Recovery: pre-emptive backup prompts + an honest, non-judgmental recovery guide.
Card declined
Explain, don't shame

A decline at the till is public and stressful.

Recovery: instant reason, one-tap unfreeze or fund, fallback to another card.
KYC rejected
A door, not a wall

Verification can fail for fixable reasons.

Recovery: specific guidance, re-submit path, human support escalation.
Offline
Graceful, not broken

Money happens on the move.

Recovery: cached balances, queued actions, honest connection banner.
FX volatility
No nasty surprises

Rates move between quote and confirm.

Recovery: rate lock with countdown; re-quote before charging.
24 — Validation & Usability Testing

We tested, we learned, we shipped better.

12 rounds · 64 moderated sessions · live beta. Every Friday the team published what we killed and why.

"The design system let us ship banking, payments and self-custody as one trusted product — and the trust cues moved funded-account rate more than any campaign."

— VP Product, NEXORA
27 — Future Roadmap

Where NEXORA goes next.

What ships once the core is trusted — and where the intelligence gets sharper.

Investing

Fractional stocks & ETFs inside the same trusted wallet — the parked v2 bet.

DeFi, safely

Curated, audited yield from within self-custody — guard-railed, never gambled.

Shared finance

Family and business modes with roles, approvals and pooled goals.

Smarter insight

Predictive cash-flow and spending nudges that feel editorial, not nagging.

28 — Reflection as Lead Product Designer

What leading this
taught me.

01
Trust is a design material

In fintech, the feeling of safety is the feature. Every confirm state, fee line and recovery ritual was a trust decision — and they moved the business more than any reward.

02
Scope is leadership

Shipping four pillars flawlessly beat shipping forty features half-built. Defending the cut — including parking investing — was the senior job.

03
Systems scale people

The token system wasn't a deliverable; it's how a small team shipped 57 screens across two platforms with zero drift.
